THE 10 RATER CLASS
The 10 Rater is another of the international classes.
The Class Rules
are 'open', which allows great freedom to develop the design and construction, particularly the rigs and sail plans.
The rules are based on the 1887 'length and sail area rule',
which allows boats with a short waterline length to have a big sail area, and longer boats to have smaller sails.
Boats are not limited in length and have overhangs beyond their waterline endings, making them light, sleek, seaworthy and fast.
Any boat can be a 10 Rater, and several Marbleheads have been successful in the class by converting to a single, larger rig, giving a 40% increase in sail area.
A typical 10 Rater is 1600mm long, has a draught of 700mm, weighs 6kg and carries one square metre of sail.
